FATES WARNING: Awaken The Guardian Live (DVD/2CD)

At the moment Fates Warning tours supporting their recent album ‘Theories Of Flight’, but in 2016 it was thirty years ago that they released their third album ‘Awaken The Guardian’. For that occasion, band leader Jim Matheos decided to gather the line-up of that era in order to play two exceptional festival gigs. That means with John Arch as vocalist, guitarist Frank Aresti, bassist Joe DiBiase and drummer Steve Zimmerman. In that constellation the band played in April 2016 at the Keep It True festival in Germany and in September they played at ProgPower USA in Atlanta. Both concerts were filmed, mixed and mastered by Bill Metoyer and now they are available on DVD/2CD/Blu-Ray and all kinds of other versions.
First we watch the show in Germany, in a mid-sized venue with a magnificently ornamented, not so huge stage. Of course it turns into a trip down memory lane, with a well-conserved John Arch who still hits the higher regions quite properly with his voice. He makes contact with the audience in a debonair manner. The musicians just concentrate on their playing and are quite unapproachable, so it seems. Thus ‘Awaken The Guardian’ is played integrally and from ‘Fata Morgana’ and ‘Guardian’ on, the audience reacts enthusiastic. After a well-done performance of ‘Exodus’, we get four songs extra: ‘The Apparition’, the strong ‘Damnation’ (this band is really influenced by Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, that’s obvious here), our favourite ‘Night On Bröcken’ about a gathering of witches on a German mountain and as finale the lengthy ‘Epitaph’. The set list at ProgPower was the same, except that ‘Night On Bröcken’ was replaced by the fast ‘Kyrie Eleison’. At ProgPower the audience is instantly more enthusiast and the band also leaves a more experienced and lively impression. This time there is only a backdrop behind the musicians, no stage props. Everything is filmed in an agreeable, adequate way and consequently this happens to be a nice document for those who were there, but surely for those who could not make it to these exceptional gigs.

Momenteel toert Fates Warning ter ondersteuning van ‘Theories Of Flight’, maar in 2016 was het dertig jaar geleden dat hun derde album ‘Awaken The Guardian’ uitkwam. Bandleider Jim Matheos besloot voor die gelegenheid de bezetting van toen terug bij elkaar te brengen voor twee uitzonderlijke festival optredens. Dat betekent met zanger John Arch, gitarist Frank Aresti, bassist Joe DiBiase en drummer Steve Zimmerman. In april trad de band in die hoedanigheid op tijdens het Duitse Keep It True festival, in september gaven ze acte de présence op ProgPower USA in Atlanta. Beide concerten werden gefilmd, gemixt en gemastered door Bill Metoyer en zijn nu verkrijgbaar als DVD/2CD/Blu-Ray, of wat je maar wenst.
We bekijken eerst de show in Duitsland, in een middelgrote zaal met een prachtig uitgebouwd podium dat niet zo groot is. Het wordt natuurlijk een trip down memory lane, met een goed geconserveerde John Arch die nog vrij vlot de hoge regionen haalt. Het is ook hij die op hartelijke wijze contact maakt met het publiek. De muzikanten concentreren zich vrij statisch op hun spel. ‘Awaken The Guardian’ wordt dus integraal gespeeld en vanaf ‘Fata Morgana’ en ‘Guardian’ is het publiek goed mee. Na een knappe uitvoering van ‘Exodus’ krijgen we in de vorm van ‘The Apparition’, het sterke ‘Damnation’ (wat is deze band toch ook door Black Sabbath en Iron Maiden beïnvloed), onze favoriet ‘Night On Bröcken’ over een bijeenkomst van heksen nabij een Duitse berg en als afsluiter het lange ‘Epitaph’ nog wat extra. De setlist tijdens het ProgPower festival is hetzelfde, behalve dat ‘Night On Bröcken’ vervangen wordt door het snelle ‘Kyrie Eleison’. Daar is het publiek al vlugger erg enthousiast en ook de band maakt een levendige indruk. Ditmaal slechts een backdrop achter de heren in een sobere podiumaankleding. Alles is mooi in beeld gebracht op een adequate manier en dus is dit een mooi document voor zij die erbij waren, maar vooral voor fans die de verplaatsing niet konden maken.
