I SUFFER INCORPORATED: Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Me(n)tal Disorders (MCD)

It is all about guitarist Alex Sweet Savage in I Suffer Incorporated. The band has started its second life, since this project was initially started in 2004. In the first period they have released two albums. Style: a fusion of heavy, death and metalcore. In Summer 2007 they split.
In Winter 2009 Alex decided to give it another try and he started looking for new musicians. The emocore style is expanded with loads of other influences. That’s the least you can say. There are only five songs on this EP with the long title, but they differ quite a lot, even though one can still hear their metalcore roots obviously. They often work with guest vocalists. ‘Blasting Rodeo Drive’ is deathcore with scream-like vocals and melodic guitar leads. ‘Don’t Wanna Be Like Johnny’ has a kind of groovy stoner edge, mostly due to the greasy voice of guest singer Il Conto (Wine Spirit). In the chorus we hear glamrock-like harmony vocals. Thus completely another style. The hacking ‘Pocket Doll’ (vocals of Val Monteleone) is scream-like metalcore again, with some extra ornaments they call progressive. Well, a smooth intermezzo can hardly be considered as ultimately progressive. I mainly looked forward to the vocal guest appearance of Mauro Gelsomini, because he is the former Kingcrow singer. His vocals in ‘Doctor Doctor’ are okay, in the chorus he is backed by grunts (funny). Even if this is supposed as a tribute to Michael Schenker, it sounds like your next door cover band. Actually I Suffer Incorporated disappoints, since also the last track happens to be rather mediocre, despite the interaction between the heartily voice of Mauro and grunts. Not a real revelation coming from Rome this time…

Bij I Suffer Incorporated draait het allemaal rond gitarist Alex Sweet Savage. De band is nu bezig aan zijn tweede leven, want aanvankelijk werd dit project al in 2004 gestart en in die eerste periode bracht men twee albums uit. Stijl: een fusie van heavy, death en metalcore. In de zomer van 2007 volgde de split.
In de winter van 2009 begint het te kriebelen bij Alex en gaat hij op zoek naar nieuwe muzikanten. De emocore stijl wordt verruimd met vele andere invloeden. Zeg dat wel. Er staan maar vijf songs op deze ep met de lange naam, maar het gaat alle kanten uit, al hoort men toch nog duidelijk de metalcore roots. Men werkt veel met gastzangers. ‘Blasting Rodeo Drive’ is deathcore met schreeuwerige vocalen en melodieuze gitaarleads. ‘Don’t Wanna Be Like Johnny’ heeft een stoner randje. De vuige stem van Il Conto (Wine Spirit) is ruw, in het refrein volgt samenzang zoals in glam rock. Een heel andere stijl dus. Het hakkende ‘Pocket Doll’ (zang Val Monteleone) is terug schreeuwerige metalcore, met wat snuifjes die men progressief noemt, maar even een intermezzo kan men bezwaarlijk het toppunt van progressief wezen noemen. Ik keek vooral uit naar de vocale gastbijdrage van Mauro Gelsomini, want dat is de vroegere zanger van Kingcrow. Zijn zang in ‘Doctor Doctor’ is okay, in het refrein komen de growls weer opzetten. Ook al is dit een tribuut aan Michael Schenker, het klinkt als een modale coverband. In feite stelt I Suffer Incorporated zwaar teleur, want ook het laatste nummer is vrij banaal ondanks de interactie tussen de warme stem van Mauro en de grunts. Geen echte revelatie uit Rome dus…
