A new discovery of Buzzville is always something we look forward to. The record label is extremely accomplished in finding Belgian talent honouring the heavy rock of the past and a no nonsense attitude. This time we are dealing with a five-headed band hailing from Genk, a place where the mines used to bring any affluence, but now there is a kind of hopeless economic situation. In brief: the ideal breeding ground for any escapism with steamy rock ‘n roll in a sweaty pub.
Although this is a debut, the band has an opulence of stage experience (even a US tour!) and this is showcased by their skilled way of playing. We start off with ‘Out In The Cold’ and it sounds like a Belgian Motörhead, so it seems. But read on… later on these influences expand towards the whole NWOBHM scene, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and many more. In short: the wealthy rock tradition of days gone by. All this is relished with a punch of psychedelics, that’s why it verges to stoner rock as well. The main feature is the warm retro sound of the instruments. Yet I do not want to label this as stoner rock band, since the emphasis lies on greasy rock, fervent soloing and a vocalist who looks up to Lemmy I guess. In ‘Angelspray’ the echoing riffs even have a doom tinge. Without any peaks or dips, but maintaining a constant high level, this debut turns into a seminal entry in the Belgian rock scene. In addition these men left nothing to coincidence: this album was mixed by Chris Tsangarides in the UK and mastered by Göran Finnberg in Sweden. These are famous names we can find on albums of international renowned bands.

Een nieuwe ontdekking van Buzzville is altijd iets waar ik naar uitkijk. Het label heeft een goede neus om Belgisch talent te ontdekken dat het heavy rock verleden alle eer aandoet en kiest voor een no nonsense houding. Ditmaal gaat het over een vijftal uit Genk, daar waar de mijnen in een ver verleden floreerden, maar nu een uitzichtloze situatie ontstaan is. De ideale voedingsbodem voor enig escapisme met stomende rock ’n roll in een zweterige kroeg.
Hoewel dit een debuut is, heeft de band al heel wat podiumervaring (zelfs een US tour!) en dat laat zich dan ook horen in de vlotte speelstijl. Met ‘Out In The Cold’ gaan we van start met de Belgische Motörhead, zo lijkt het wel. Later verspreiden deze invloeden zich zowat over de hele NWOBHM, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin,… kortom de rijke rocktraditie van jaren terug. Dit alles wordt verrijkt met een snuifje psychedelica waarbij stoner rock niet veraf is. Voorop staat het warme retro geluid van de instrumenten. Toch wil ik Solenoid geen stoner band noemen, want de nadruk ligt op vunzige rock, vurige solo’s en een zanger die Lemmy waarschijnlijk als grote voorbeeld heeft. In ‘Angelspray’ hebben de zinderende riffs zelfs een doom tintje. Zonder noemenswaardige uitschieters, maar door een constante kwaliteit te handhaven is dit debuut een entree in de Belgische rockscene die uiterst veelbelovend te noemen is. De mannen lieten trouwens niets aan het toeval over: dit album werd gemixt door Chris Tsangarides in de UK en gemastered door Göran Finnberg in Zweden. Dat zijn overbekende namen die we op de schijven terugvinden van internationaal gerenommeerde acts.
