STUCK MOJO: The Great Revival

Stuck Mojo a trendsetter? In a sense it is, since they came up with a blend of southern rock, metal, pop and… rap in 1989. Indeed rap, that spoken daily paper most of our metal fans could not appreciate (including me hehe). Yet they gathered massive success and they were even considered as an echelon. Crossover was born! In 2000 founder and guitarist Rich Ward did away with the band and focused on other projects. At that time – we speak of early 2005 – I got him on the phone when he played in Fozzy with WWE champion Chris Jericho as vocalist. Rich Ward was at the crossroads of life that very moment. In February 2005 Stuck Mojo rose from their ashes and did a carefully scheduled tour to find out what response they would get. Well, it was massive and more tours followed.
Not earlier than 2006 Stuck Mojo entered the studio – with new vocalist Lord Nelson – and they did not come out of it before the new album ‘Southern Born Killers’ was fixed. It was revolutionary that the album was put on line to download for free, only two years later it was released as a common album by Napalm Records, their new boss in crime of these Americans. All this explains why we can enjoy another album so fast. ‘The Great Revival’ marks – just as the title suggests – the confirmation of the resurrection of Stuck Mojo. This rebirth is introduced by a dark intro but soon we hear some juicy southern alike riffs and soloing of Rich Ward. Personally I prefer the guitar skills of Rich Ward above all. Of course we meet with some rapping tapping of Lord Nelson, but he does some genuine usual warm-hearted vocals as well. In several tracks he got some support by female vocals. This is the talent of rising star Christine Cook and it appears to be a soulful singer. Songs like ‘Friends’ and ‘Invincible’ are nearly poppy and can be played on radio stations because of their catchy vocal lines.
Highlights are the oriental tinged ‘The Flood’, the solid ‘Now That You’re All Alone’ (which reminded me of Eminem’s ‘Gangsta Paradise’ and includes very nice lyrics) and… oh surprise: a version of John Denver’s ‘Country Roads’ which is nothing but remarkable. Rich kept a promise to his mother in this song, he once promised her to sing this tune. The main part of this cover is original and an ode to his mother. Furthermore we have some short pieces one may describe as preaching or statements and ‘There’s A Miracle Comin’ is served by magnificent, emotive guitar skills. Although everything on ‘The Great Revival’ is not my cup of tea, I have to admit that they are masters in writing catchy song and that’s why I understand the praise they got when touring recently with Volbeat.

Stuck Mojo een trendsetter? In zekere zin wel, want zij kwamen in 1989 al met een mix van southern rock, metal, pop en… rap. Inderdaad, dat gesproken dagblad dat bij metalfans in ’t algemeen niet in dank wordt afgenomen. Toch kenden zij grote successen en zelfs navolging. Crossover was geboren! In 2000 doekte oprichter/gitarist Rich Ward de band op en richtte zich op andere projecten. In die tijd – we spreken van begin 2005 – had ik hem aan de lijn toen hij in Fozzy speelde waar WWE wereldkampioen Chris Jericho zanger van was. Rich Ward stond toen op een kruispunt in zijn leven. In februari 2005 verrees Stuck Mojo uit zijn eigen as en deed allereerst een voorzichtige tournee om te zien hoe de respons was. Het werd een groot succes en meerdere tours volgden.
Pas in 2006 dook Stuck Mojo – met nieuwe zanger Lord Nelson - de studio in en kwam er pas terug uit met de nieuwe plaat ‘Southern Born Killers’ onder de arm. Revolutionair werd het album eerst on line gezet om gratis te downloaden, pas twee jaar later werd het ook echt als cd uitgebracht door Napalm Records, de nieuwe broodheer van deze Amerikanen. Dat verklaart waarom er nu al een volgend album is. ‘The Great Revival’ markeert – zoals de titel aangeeft – de bevestiging van de wederopstanding van Stuck Mojo. Die terugkeer kondigt zich donker aan maar spoedig weerklinken de smeuïge southern-gerichte riffs en solo’s van Rich Ward. Persoonlijk vind ik het gitaarwerk de sterkste troef van dit album. Natuurlijk wordt er heel wat gerapt door Lord Nelson, maar hij zingt ook gewoon met een aangename warme stem. In meerdere nummers krijgt hij gezelschap van vrouwelijke vocalen. Dat is het aanstormende talent Christine Cook en het is een soulvolle zangeres. Nummers als ‘Friends’ en ‘Invincible’ zijn bijna poppy en kunnen zo de radio op door hun toegankelijke zanglijnen.
De hoogtepunten zijn het oosters getinte ‘The Flood’, het sterke ‘Now That You’re All Alone’ (dat me erg aan Eminem’s ‘Gangsta Paradise’ doet denken en een erg mooie tekst heeft) en… o verrassing: een versie van John Denver’s ‘Country Roads’ die heel opmerkelijk is. Rich kwam hiermee een belofte aan zijn moeder na aan wie hij ooit beloofde dit te zingen. Het grootste deel van de cover is eigen werk en een ode aan mama. Dan zijn er nog de korte stukjes die men als preek of statement kan omschrijven en daarvan is ‘There’s A Miracle Comin’ voorzien van prachtig, gevoelig gitaarwerk. Ook al is niet alles op ‘The Great Revival’ mijn pakkie an, na enkele keren draaien moet ik toegeven dat ze sterke songs kunnen schrijven en dus begrijp ik ook de lof die hen toekwam toen ze onlangs met Volbeat toerden.
