Don’t expect Axel Rudi Pell to do anything surprising. Don’t expect him to do anything bad either.
Pell’s music has hardly changed over the years – ever since his first solo album, his music has been somewhere between RAINBOW and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, and that’s exactly where it still is. He’s never succumbed to anything modern or new (or ‘nu’, as it’s supposed to be spelled nowadays). Pell has always done his own thing, and you know what... it still works.
This doesn’t mean he hasn’t progressed, though. His albums are almost always top quality (I wasn’t too fond of the covers album, but then I rarely am). I’ve never seen him live, but this dvd definitely convinced me I just have to go and see him one day.
Disk 1 is a show filmed at the 2007 Rock Hard festival, where Pell and his band performed as co-headliners, alongside THIN LIZZY. And what an exciting show it was (if, at 75 minutes, a bit short). The band rage through songs like ‘Fly To The Moon’, ‘The Temple Of The King’ and the unforgettable ‘Strong As A Rock’. I may prefer the Jeff Scott Soto days, but you can’t fault Johnny Gioeli. He’s a top notch singer and an excellent entertainer.
Disk 2 is called the ‘official bootleg disk’. It doesn’t offer the same sound and picture quality as disk one, but it’s packed with goodies: live clips from shows in Sweden, Germany, the UK, Switzerland and Belgium (Graspop). It’s a nice bonus to the main show.
Exciting stuff. Believe me, you don’t want to miss this one...

Verwacht van Axel Rudi Pell niet dat hij iets verrassends zal doen. Verwacht ook niet dat hij iets slechts zal doen.
Pells muziek is nauwelijks veranderd doorheen de jaren – sinds zijn eerste soloalbum kun je zijn muziek ergens situeren tussen RAINBOW en YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, en daar is ze nog steeds. Hij heeft zich nooit laten verleiden om iets moderns of nieuws (‘nu’, zoals ze dat tegenwoordig spellen) te brengen. Hij deed steeds z’n eigen ding en… het werkt.
Dit betekent dan ook niet dat hij altijd heeft stilgestaan. Zijn albums zijn bijna zonder uitzondering van hoge kwaliteit (ik was niet gek van het coversalbum, maar dat ben ik dan ook zelden). Ik heb hem nog nooit live aan het werk gezien, maar deze dvd heeft me alvast overtuigd dat ik daar verandering in moet brengen.

En wat een schitterende show was het (hoewel met z’n 75 minuten een beetje kort). De band scheurt door nummers als ‘Fly To The Moon’, ‘The Temple Of The King’ en het onvergetelijke ‘Strong As A Rock’. Ik mag dan wel de Jeff Scott Soto-jaren verkiezen, je kunt op Johnny Gioeli niets aanmerken; hij is een steengoede zanger en een sterk entertainer.
Dvd 2 is de ‘official bootleg dvd’. Deze heeft niet dezelfde klank- en beeldkwaliteit als het hoofdprogramma, maar het schijfje staat proppensvol leuke extraatjes: liveclips van shows in Zweden, Duitsland Groot-Brittannië en zelf ons eigenste België (Graspop). Een leuke bonus.
Opwindend schijfje. Geloof me, deze dvd wil je niet missen…
