ENVINYA: Inner Silence

Powerful rock/metal with female vocals, accessible without being too poppy. That appears to be the general impression after listening to the debut album ‘Inner Silence’ of Envinya. This six-piece comes from Munich, Germany and was formed in 2006. In June 2010 they released an EP, ‘Beyond The Dark’ with five songs. The reactions of the German press were positive. A contract with Massacre Records finally resulted in the release of ‘Inner Silence’.
Vocalist Natalie Pereira dos Santos has a clear, powerful voice. The band does not belong to the numerous gothic metal bands, but plays energetic metal with a progressive tinge in a modern production. The ten self-written compositions are quite catchy, with now and then a sure-fire guitar solo of Markus Herz and backing keyboards of Monika Strobl. With opening track ‘Faceless’ Envinya does show its face, yet it turns out to be impossible to put the band in one pigeonhole. Vigorous up tempo rock, let us call it that way, since there are (fortunately) no ballads on the record. Natalie can sing rather rough as well, she proves it in the beginning of ‘Forlorn’. The band shot a video clip for this track. The raucous incidental grunts in songs like ‘In My Hands’, ‘Swallow’ and ‘Satin And Silk’ are done by guitarist Thomas Knauer. It is an agreeable experience to listen to the album, but none of the tracks really stand out. Every song includes lots of vocals, but the musicians play tight and skilful. In brief: a professional album with flair.

Krachtige rock/metal met vrouwelijke zang, toegankelijk zonder al te poppy te worden. Dat is zowat de algemene indruk na het beluisteren van het debuutalbum ‘Inner Silence’ van Envinya. Het zestal komt uit München, Duitsland en werd opgericht in 2006. In juni 2010 brachten ze een EP uit, ‘Beyond The Dark’ met vijf songs. De reacties in de Duitse pers waren lovend. Een contract met Massacre leidde uiteindelijk tot de release van ‘Inner Silence’.
Zangeres Natalie Pereira dos Santos heeft een heldere, krachtige stem. De band hoort niet tot de talrijke gothic metal bands, maar speelt vinnige metal met een progressief tintje in een moderne productie. De tien eigen composities zijn toegankelijk, met hier en daar een knappe gitaarsolo van Markus Herz en ondersteunend keyboardwerk van Monika Strobl. Met opener ‘Faceless’ toont Envinya het gelaat, maar het is onmogelijk een bepaalde stijl op de muziek te plakken. Pittige rock in hoge versnelling, laten we het daarop houden, want er staan (gelukkig) geen ballads op de plaat. Dat Natalie ook ruw uit de hoek kan komen bewijst ze in het begin van ‘Forlorn’, waar trouwens een videoclip voor geschoten is. De ruwe incidentele grunts in songs als ‘In My Hands’, ‘Swallow’ en ‘Satin And Silk’ komen van gitarist Thomas Knauer. Het album luistert aangenaam weg, maar geen enkele track springt er bovenuit. Elk nummer bevat veel zang, maar de muzikanten spelen strak en kundig. Kortom, een professioneel album met pit.
