SADIST: Hyaena

The Italian Sadist delivered four albums during the nineties, then the activities stopped until they came back in 2007 with ‘Sadist’. ‘Hyaena’, their seventh offspring, is a concept album centered around this African scavenger, whose legends claim it’s ridden by the devil.
Hurrying drums and dissonant guitars define the beginnings of ‘The Lonely Mountain’, after a slice of percussion/sounds bringing a more or less African flavor, the keyboard enriches the sound and then we get the vocals, a scream like, raw, sharp grunt, finally Sadist goes slowly jazz to take us to the end. In ‘Pachycrocuta’ (the name of a prehistoric predecessor of the hyaena) first we get peculiar technical guitar followed by virtuoso solo, then comes a very classical inspired keyboard break, finally indulge strange drum patterns. ‘Bouki’ is built around the strongest hook of the album: a repetitive keyboard tune with, just a few moments later, added drums, again technical and heavy. ‘The Devil’ has a long crystal keyboard intro, then technical hell breaks loose again with this time a predominant deep growl and a break with percussion and a bit of African spoken lyrics. ‘Scavenger’ has a pretty catchy chorus and is, in Sadist standards, rather square. In ‘Gadawan’, they come to rest completely, after a long acoustic guitar solo, the other instruments join, but it stays an acoustic/jazzy interlude. ‘Eternal Enemies’ has some percussion and mood building noises, but they never have really the effect they aim for, summoning an African mood, even if Sadist invited an African percussionist for that task. In this song however they use at several points a guitar riff with peculiar tone color which succeeds in creating an ‘ethnic metal’ feel. The two next ones are more raw, less technical, less interesting (the bio uses the word ‘progressive’, but I think that’s exaggerated), but the closing song is again a very diversely build piece.
Good album, but ‘Bouki’ proves that it could have been so much stronger. Mixing styles is alright, but the focus should remain on the song.

Het Italiaanse Sadist maakte in de nineties vier albums, waarna de activiteiten stilvielen tot ze in 2007 terugkwamen met ‘Sadist’. ‘Hyaena’, hun zevende worp, is een conceptalbum rond deze Afrikaanse aaseter, waarvan legendes beweren dat het door de duivel bereden werd.
Voortsnellende drums en dissonante gitaar trekken ‘The Lonely Mountain’ op gang, na een flard percussie/geluiden die enigszins een Afrikaans sfeertje oproepen, komt de keyboard het geluid verrijken en dan krijgen we de vocalen erbij, een schreeuwerige, ruig scherpe grunt , tenslotte gaat Sadist even de kalme jazzy toer op om uitgeleide te doen. In ‘Pachycrocuta’ (de naam van een prehistorische voorouder van de hyena) eerst merkwaardig technische gitaarloopjes en virtuoze gitaarsolo, dan erg op klassieke leest geschoeide keyboard break, tenslotte is het aan de drummer om rare patronen te meppen. ‘Bouki’ is gebouwd rond de sterkste hook van het album: een repetitief keyboard motief waar even later de drums invallen, weer technisch en heavy. ‘The Devil’ heeft een lange kristallen keyboard intro, waarna de technische hel weer losbarst met deze keer een overwegend diepe growl en een break met percussie en stukje Afrikaanse gesproken tekst. ‘Scavenger’ heeft een vrij catchy refrein en is, naar Sadist normen, eerder braaf te noemen. Bij ‘Gadawan’ komen ze helemaal tot rust, na een lange akoestische gitaarsolo vallen andere instrumenten in, maar het blijft een akoestisch/jazzy interludium. ‘Eternal Enemies’ heeft wat percussie en sfeergeluiden, maar die hebben nergens het gewenste effect, nl. een Afrikaanse sfeer oproepen, zelfs al vroeg Sadist een Afrikaanse percussionist om hen te helpen. In dit nummer echter larderen ze het nummer op verschillende plaatsen met een gitaarloopje met merkwaardige tonaliteit dat een ‘etnisch metal’ gevoel oproept. De twee volgende zijn rauwer, minder technisch (de bio gebruikt het woord ‘progressief’, maar dat lijkt we wat misplaatst), maar de afsluiter is nog eens een heel divers opgebouwd stuk.
Goed album, maar ‘Bouki’ bewijst dat er meer uit te halen valt. Stijlen mengen is prima, maar de focus moet op de ‘song’ blijven.
