MAGNUS KARLSSON'S FREE FALL: Kingdom Of Rock

We all know them by now: those artists, gifted with an unstoppable inspiration while they see the (vocal) performances in their dreams. Some of them come to huge projects; just think of Avantasia under the spirited guidance of Tobias Sammet or Ayreon under the vigilant eye of Arjen Lucassen. The Swedish Magnus Karlsson is another individual of that ilk: a musical Jack-of-all-trades who plays – in this case – all instruments except drums and invited a wide range of different vocalists to colour his compositions with more charisma.
In this capacity he has made a sophomore album as Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall, entitled ‘Kingdom Of Rock’. His vocalists are not the least, if we go into some name dropping. Jorn Lande can open the festivities with his heartbreaking voice, Jakob Samuel appears to have a sharper timbre in the up-tempo rock song ‘Out Of The Dark’ and Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) reigns in the – especially written for him – ‘When The Sky Falls’. Two of the songs are sung by Magnus himself in a meritorious manner. A constant feature in the songs – even in the smoother ‘The Right Moment’ exceptionally sung by a woman – are the abundant neo-classical guitar eruptions in which Karlsson excels as master of the record. A special mention also goes to the folky ‘Another Life’ with Rick Altzi behind the microphone and the fetching ‘Angel Of The Night’ with vocalist David Readman. The occluding track ‘Walk This Road Alone’ includes an amazing riff and it is sung by Magnus himself. It might be quite standard material in classic rock, yet a vigorous record with great time listening to it as result.
Magnus Karlsson is no stranger to us. He contributed to many Frontiers releases, like the Allen/Lande trilogy, Starbreaker, Bob Catley, Kiske/Somerville and more. In 2008 he joined Primal Fear and became one of their three guitarists in this heavy metal band that will release a new album in January as well. The whole album was produced in Denmark by Jacob Hansen.

We kennen ze wel: die artiesten, begiftigd met een niet te stoppen inspiratie terwijl ze in hun dromen al de uitvoerders zien. Sommigen onder hen komen tot grootse projecten; denken we maar even aan Avantasia onder de bezielde leiding van Tobias Sammet of Ayreon onder het waakzaam oog van Arjen Lucassen. De Zweed Magnus Karlsson is echter ook zo’n individu: een muzikale duizendpoot die in dit geval ook nog alle instrumenten, behalve de drums, bespeelt en een keur aan bekende vocalisten uitnodigt om zijn composities te vertolken met meer charisma.
In die hoedanigheid is hij toe aan een tweede album als Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall, genaamd ‘Kingdom Of Rock’. En zijn vocalisten zijn niet de minsten, daar kan je van op aan als we even aan name dropping doen. Jorn Lande mag de titelsong doen om te openen, Jakob Samuel heeft een scherpere stem in het uptempo rock nummer ‘Out Of The Dark’ en Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) heerst in het hem op het lijf geschreven ‘When The Sky Falls’. Twee van de songs worden ook verdienstelijk door Magnus zelf gezongen. Een constante in de songs – zelfs in het wat zachtere ‘The Right Moment’ als enige gezongen door een vrouw – zijn de klaterende neoklassieke gitaarsolo’s waar Karlsson een meester in is. Speciale vermeldingen krijgen ook het folky ‘Another Life’ met Rick Altzi achter de microfoon en het aanstekelijke ‘Angel Of The Night’ met vocalist David Readman. De uitvaart ‘Walk This Road Alone’ bevat trouwens ook een fantastische riff, gezongen door Magnus zelf. Het mag dan allemaal binnen de lijntjes van de classic rock kleuren, toch een stevige plaat met luisterplezier als gevolg.
