UR DRAUGR: With Hunger Undying

In Spring Ur Draugr debuted with the EP ’The Wretched Ascetic’, brimming with extreme complexity. They are signed by ATMF to release their first full length album ‘With Hunger Undying’. The Australian trio unrelenting continues its challenging course. The lengthy compositions invoke an uneasy feeling with loads of dissonant sounds and twists and turns.
Ur Draugr does not make it easy for the listener. The foundation is black/death metal, but the presentation shows a kind of progressive élan with high-skilled technical abilities. At the time of the EP we were not totally convinced, but the band from vocalist/guitarist Drew James Griffiths develops its own sound step by step. The brutal outburst where ‘Fertile Crescent’ impresses with, still reminds a bit of early Opeth, but for the rest all comparisons are gone. The bestial vocals often sound like a raucous primordial death metal scream. Repetitive patterns build up tension in the tight as hell ‘Seeds Sown In Famine’. In the midst of this hard to fathom stuff, one can find the moment of quiescent rest ‘Solace Within Torpor’ with acoustic guitars, followed by another wall of chaotic distortion. ‘Lethe Drinker’ is introvert and atmospheric again, while occluding track ‘With Hunger Undying’ verges the most to black metal. This will possibly appeal to fans from bands such as Blut Aus Nord and maybe De Profundis.

In het voorjaar debuteerde Ur Draugr met de EP ’The Wretched Ascetic’ boordevol extreme complexiteit. Ze zijn getekend door ATMF om hun volwaardige debuutalbum ‘With Hunger Undying’ uit te brengen. Het Australische trio zet haar uitdagende koers onverminderd voort. De lange composities veroorzaken een ongemakkelijk gevoel met veel dissonante klanken en wispelturigheid.
Ur Draugr maakt het de luisteraar niet gemakkelijk. De basis is black/death metal, maar de uitwerking vertoont een progressief élan dat hoogbegaafde technische vaardigheid verraadt. Ten tijde van de EP waren wij nog niet overtuigd, maar de band van zanger/gitarist Drew James Griffiths vindt stilletjes aan een eigen geluid. De brutale uitval waarmee ‘Fertile Crescent’ overdondert, doet nog enigszins aan de vroege Opeth denken, maar verder vallen vergelijkingen weg. De bestiale zang hanteert dikwijls een rauwe oerschreeuw uit primordiale death metal. Repetitieve klanken bouwen de spanning op in het stotende ‘Seeds Sown In Famine’. Temidden van deze zwaar te behappen kost vinden we het rustpunt ‘Solace Within Torpor’ met akoestische gitaren, om daarna terug een muur van chaotische vervorming op ons af te vuren. ‘Lethe Drinker’ is weer ingetogen, terwijl afsluiter ‘With Hunger Undying’ het meest naar black metal neigt. Dit zal het meeste succes boeken bij liefhebbers van bands zoals Blut Aus Nord of misschien De Profundis.
