English:

The third album of these Germans show us the sequel of the legend of Sedna, goddess of the Inuit, Captain McGuerkin and his men. He rises from his tomb at the bottom of the ocean and leads his revengeful crew into the next battle. The Belgian artist Kris Verwimp once again provided the artwork.

After a classical inspired intro, the battle begins in ‘This Means War’, a heavy galloping
metal piece with fine, flashing guitar solo. On the slightly epic ‘Glorriors’ they shift down gear, again we get bright soloing and, just as in the opener, lots of robust backings. ‘Hail’ is more melodic and it struck me that this album is a lot less speedy then ‘Ocean Blade’, after a quick check it turns out that one of the two guitarists has been replaced: Adrian is new and Jens still shreds. Fortunately, on ‘Heart Of Evil’ they put the pedal to the metal, but ‘Night’ is slower, sober. Then comes ‘For Victory’, a fine acoustic folk song. Nevertheless peculiar, since elsewhere there’s no folk influence whatsoever. ‘God’ is pretty boring, even if all the ingredients are there, it lacks some fire. After an acoustic intro, the mighty melodic epic angle of ‘On Fire’ amends a bit, but the songs drag along too long and the closing song has the same problem, despite great choruses and solo.

After ‘Ocean Blade’, this third chapter of the story, comes a bit as a disappointment.

Nederlands:

Daarna is ‘For Victory’ een fijn akoestisch folk nummer.

English:

The early days of Poseydon go back to 1992 when guitarist Alain De Block founded this band. Initially the band only recorded a single and a demo. That is mainly because De Block concentrated himself for years on Everglow, but in 2010 the reunion of Poseydon led to new work. The first result happened to be ‘Cold World’ with six songs, but now we have the new full length ‘Masterpiece’ including ten songs. During the years the thrash metal band started to insert more and more death metal influences in their compositions. These are mainly noticeable in the rough vocals of Christoph Lamsens, although he sounds more hoarse than producing proper rolling grunts.

The songs include sure-fire guitar skills and soloing of the moving spirit of the band, but in opener ‘Classified’ it leaps to the eye that riffing turned out quite repetitive, being less exciting. The band plays tight and adds any spoken samples in several songs. Tips to listen to are ‘Weakness’ and ‘Innocent Blood’, although we expected more – compose-wise and production-wise – after all these years with loads of experience. This ‘masterpiece’ comes not any further than meritorious.

Nederlands:

SOLUTION .45: Nightmares In The Waking State - Part II

English:

Not even a year after ‘part I’, the second part of ‘Nightmares’ is released. Not very surprising, since the recordings for both chapters were done at the same time, but still pretty quick. And what’s the album about? To put it in the words of the band: ‘life is often a really dark and nasty place and we’d like to see Nightmares as the soundtrack to that’.

After the sombre electronic/symphonic ‘Pathways’, ‘Path of Light’ chops wildly around. In this techno death track, there’s an undertow of melody and a shredding solo, while we vocally get only Swedish grunt. ‘Mutation’ is more melodic, the grunts (even old school death type) alternate with clean vocals, while the drums keep a merciless pace. ‘Sand’ opens quietly, then comes a flashing guitar and then the violence sets in, pretty hectically, further some neo-classic guitar, poppy clean against raw grunt. Solution.45’s multi vocal trademark! Diverse and varied, pretty prog death! ‘Inescapable’ is more straightforward, less adventurous with catchy vocals and short atmospheric break. ‘Curse’ opens as an acoustic haven, before turning heavy halfway, followed by a break with some great soloing. Then ‘Chain’ is again shorter, rawer, concise, with only a small input of clean vocals and rather hectic outro. ‘Wheels’ has some keys in which add a symphonic flavour, catchy vocal hook, great guitar. In ‘Mantra’ there are even – above the aforementioned ingredients – Eastern influences and again catchy clean vocals which soften the whole a bit. ‘Heavy Lies The Crown’ starts pretty calm, but arrives quickly in techno death waters with, this time, even some nasty growls on top as usually countered with clean vocals.

Technical and heavy, sensitive as well as melodic: classy prog/techno death!

Nederlands:

Solution.45’s Multi-vocaal handelsmerk!

English:

These exuberant Germans act extra jolly and funny on this EP (with a length of no less than 41 minutes!). Earlier they got noticed with four albums, of which ’Rastlos’ and ‘Mach Dich Frei’ are true recommended discs in the pagan metal scène with influences from Finntroll and Moonsorrow, but more cheerful. According to the band, this happens to be the EP they always wanted to make, but they did not dare doing it. That refers to quite a remarkable choice of covers beyond the boundaries of genres. Hey, we are allowed to party and have a good time…

What to think of ‘Wrecking Ball’ from Miley Cyrus or ‘Beat It’ from Michael Jackson? Or any typical German humour tracks like ‘Der Durch Die Scheibeboxxxer’ from K.I.Z. or ‘Das Schlimmste Ist, Wenn Das Bier Alle Ist’ from Die Kassierer? Actually this entire EP is dedicated to drinking beer and having fun. That is also obvious in the video clip for ‘Auf Die Zwölf’ (their homage to Die Mannschaft) which is one of the four new songs on this EP. In this diverting video clip the band fraternizes with Equilibrium. When you read this early October, Finsterforst is touring with Equilibrium, plus Heidevolk and Nothgard. Musically they continue on the well-known path: pagan metal with accordion and incidentally few horns. Raucous blackened vocals, but also a lot of sturdy clean harmony chants. This is illustrated in the new tracks, such as opener ‘Bottle Gods’. They will have to search for a new accordionist, since Johannes Joseph left the band early 2016 and he co-defined the sound of Finsterforst.

Nederlands:
