English:

At the moment Fates Warning tours supporting their recent album ‘Theories Of Flight’, but in 2016 it was thirty years ago that they released their third album ‘Awaken The Guardian’. For that occasion, band leader Jim Matheos decided to gather the line-up of that era in order to play two exceptional festival gigs. That means with John Arch as vocalist, guitarist Frank Aresti, bassist Joe DiBiase and drummer Steve Zimmerman. In that constellation the band played in April 2016 at the Keep It True festival in Germany and in September they played at ProgPower USA in Atlanta. Both concerts were filmed, mixed and mastered by Bill Metoyer and now they are available on DVD/2CD/Blu-Ray and all kinds of other versions.

First we watch the show in Germany, in a mid-sized venue with a magnificently ornamented, not so huge stage. Of course it turns into a trip down memory lane, with a well-conserved John Arch who still hits the higher regions quite properly with his voice. He makes contact with the audience in a debonair manner. The musicians just concentrate on their playing and are quite unapproachable, so it seems. Thus ‘Awaken The Guardian’ is played integrally and from ‘Fata Morgana’ and ‘Guardian’ on, the audience reacts enthusiastic. After a well-done performance of ‘Exodus’, we get four songs extra: ‘The Apparition’, the strong ‘Damnation’ (this band is really influenced by Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, that’s obvious here), our favourite ‘Night On Bröcken’ about a gathering of witches on a German mountain and as finale the lengthy ‘Epitaph’. The set list at ProgPower was the same, except that ‘Night On Bröcken’ was replaced by the fast ‘Kyrie Eleison’. At ProgPower the audience is instantly more enthusiast and the band also leaves a more experienced and lively impression. This time there is only a backdrop behind the musicians, no stage props. Everything is filmed in an agreeable, adequate way and consequently this happens to be a nice document for those who were there, but surely for those who could not make it to these exceptional gigs.

Nederlands:

English:

After his debut in 2012 with ‘Beyond The Boundaries of Sin’, Mark Shelton, founder of Manilla Road, strikes back with a sophomore effort. This time MR’s drummer Randy Foxe is in the line-up as well and Mark states that this result made him sometimes think of stuff that could have been on the ‘Out Of The Abyss’ album.

‘Lightwave’ opens pretty epic in MR style, but the vocals are rather rough, almost grunt.
‘Necromantio’ is pretty hectic heavy, but the vocals are, this time, recognizable, with delicious break with solo in its midst. The long epic ‘To Serve Man’ is MR with royal helpings of keys and even if Mark uses his raw/grunt voice, his typical nasal sound of MR is present as well. Halfway, there’s a bombastic break with catchy keys, followed by a speedy passage. ‘It’s Alive’ is a lot shorter, heavy doom with organ, reminding of MR’s ‘The Deluge’. Eerie keys in the intro of ‘Galaxy’ transit into a heavy as hell song with again that mix of grunt and clean. Closer ‘Hawthorn’, with fragile piano intro, has also an epical length, transiting through organ into a song that gets heavier and heavier along the way and fades out with experimental keys.

Fans of Manilla Road shouldn’t hesitate a second, this is heavier stuff in the same vein.

Nederlands:

Tracklist:

Lightwave (3’53”)
Necromantio (4’51”)
To Serve Man (16’07”)
It’s Alive (7’12”)
The Galaxy Being (6’53”)
The Last Rites of Edward Hawthorn (13’36”)

Musicians:

Mark Shelton – vocals, guitars & piano
E.C. Hellwell – bass, synth & keyboards

English:

When we should be challenged to guess the nationality of Shores Of Null, I think we would properly be misled. These Romans simply put our geographic expectations of metal on hold. Never before we heard an Italian band that sounded so Scandinavian and on top of that it leaves us in awe! Think of Amorphis, a pinch of Katatonia, emotive soloing in the vein of Saturnus and for the rest the whole doom/death/gothic scène of the nineties that brought forth lots of stunners. It surely had its influence on this recommended five-piece based in Rome.

With the debut ‘Quiescence’ (2014), they already caught our attention and the sophomore album ‘Black Drapes For Tomorrow’ even surpasses that. Right away opener ‘Tributary Waters’ make us wallow in an opulence of Katatonia alike guitars; this is an instrumental start with a great vibe. The doom/death/gothic of these guys comes to full bloom in ‘Donau’ which reminds us in some parts of In The Woods (dark, momentous clean chants). The beauty of melancholy is the main feature on this album, with ‘Tide Against Us’ and its Saturnus alike leads as next highlight. In a couple of songs we hear cello as extra. In a dynamic and amazing way, they combine the clean vocals of Davide Straccione with raucous growls and any blackened screams, the latter ones sometimes as echo or harmony vocals with clean and then we think of Thurisaz in ‘House Of Cries’ and ‘We Ain’t Ashes’. Doom metal happens to be the leading factor on this album and it results in different standout songs such as the title track with its contemplative spoken passages or the sentimental starting and really captivating ‘We Ain’t Ashes’. To say nothing of ’The Kolyma Route’ where they create a spiritual atmosphere with pontifical chants at the end. This album haunts you from start to finish! Those who like to dive deep into enchanting sounds of doom/death metal with some old school gothic elements, as well as fans of Amorphis, Katatonia and Omnium Gatherium, they will have a great time listening to ‘Black Drapes For Tomorrow’! A top notch album in its genre!

Nederlands:
