After their ‘Enter Deception’ (2006) debut, the Americans return with a long overdue follow up. This time founder Chris has taken the vocal duties. These ‘Kings of American Power Metal’ should have a trademark of energy, intensity and infectious melody … Let’s see!

‘Survivors’ is a bull’s eye shot with its catchy chorus embedded, great melodic power on speed, including some shredding on guitar. ‘Heresy’ delivers about the same, but more energetic, with strong vocal hooks due to the melodic singing lines and ‘Shadowfold’ continues in that same intense and fast vein. ‘Tyrant’ is equally fast, tight and nervous with melodic vocal lines and an impressive solo. On ‘Grid’ they go a bit slower, but ‘Pride’ is again a whirlwind of sheer power. In the drums driven ‘Shimmering’ , shouter Chris surpasses himself, while ‘Good Enough’ is the most restrained track, but with the best vocal hook. ‘War’ is darker in nature but again raging up-tempo, while ‘Riot’ offers the largest patch of guitar and again the ever present melodic singing.

Intense, tight, virtuoso (prog)power with great melodies.

Laten we eens kijken!

English:

It was during Indian Summer 2016 that we had our first encounter with the American 1476, being the brainchild of the duo Robb Kavjian and Neil DeRosa hailing from New England (USA). Their signing at Prophecy Productions was invigorated with the re-release of their back-catalogue, three albums and an EP. Diving deeper into the matter, particularly in ’Wildwood’, resulted in proper fascination for this enigmatic duo. New work was already announced back then, with ‘Our Season Draws Near’ it was actually launched at the world late March.

As the guys mention themselves, every album happens to be different, a peculiar adventure. In this respect it is tenable that every creation is a reflection of a certain moment in the life of the creator(s). For 1476 it was an intense and deep-draught process on ‘Our Season Draws Near’. One can find neo-folk in the moments of contemplation as pure singer-songwriters. Later they rock wild and raw with some punk influences in galore. Just listen to ‘Winter Of Wolves’ and think of the guitar sound of The Clash. On top of that, atmospheric passages remain a strong characteristic of the band and next they smoothly rock in Sólstafir ways (‘Ettins’) or give a wink to Pink Floyd with beautiful, emotive soloing in ‘Our Silver Age’ and ‘Our Ice Age’. The latter one is the nine minutes long closing track that gives you goose-bumps. It starts very introvert with thoughtful vocals and delicious solos, but then they give it a 180° turn in wildest punk attitudes – a well-thought nonchalance – just like during up-tempo songs like ‘Ettins’ and ‘Winter Of Winds’. Even here they slacken down pace from time to time, on the other hand clean vocals sometimes pass into raucous scream parts, having the nearest approach to blackened art. All this to free their demons. In spatial soaring sounds they repent in ‘Solitude (Exterior)’ in which the voice of Mark Lanegan pops up as reference, but also the fragile beauty of Sophia (continuation The God Machine), surely in the fetching ‘Sorgen’. The contrast between melancholic reveries and cut loose in exuberant rock songs gives us an engrossing collection of songs, compact and well-structured and regaled with excellent and mostly fluttering guitar skills of ultimately genuine musicians. In addition they write deep-draught lyrics as well, an invitation for food for thought for everybody. Isn’t that a beloved soundtrack to relish these winter evenings with inner warmth?

Nederlands:

English:

Mid 2015 Art Of Anarchy released the self-titled debute album with Scott Weiland as vocalist. With the passing away of this ‘enfant terrible’, the super group with a.o. guitarist Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (Guns ‘N Roses) and bassist John Moyer (Adrenaline Mob, Disturbed) in their ranks, obviously had a problem. Yet now, two years later they strike back with a glorious successor called ‘The Madness’ and no less a person than Creed vocalist Scott Stapp appears to be the new front man. That is really heart-warming to find out as grunge aficionado! It makes the album a bit different, going into the direction of US alternative rock and Alter Bridge. That is no wonder… the musicians of Creed are all in Alter Bridge.

We find ten compact songs of equal quality, perfectly fitting for playing at maximum volume in your car and enjoy. The up-tempo rock of ‘Echo Of A Scream’ is catchy with a wide range of sure-fire guitar solos of Thal and Votta, but most of all the strong vocal performance of Stapp leaps to the eye, giving the songs their final timbre. If you remember that typical vocal style of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, then we soon are in the nearest approach to ‘1000 Degrees’, the thoughtful starting ‘No Surrender’ or the sentimental ballad ‘Changed Man’. This is idiosyncratic sturdy American rock with personal lyrics and suitable for playing at FM radio stations or even during the credits of a TV series. ‘Somber’ is another introspective moment, but they swallow the bait again in ‘Dancing With The Devil’ and the wild and furious ‘Afterburn’. Better than the debut!

Nederlands:
