English:

After their ‘I Am Anonymous’ (2012) debut, another concept album follows in what will become a trilogy. In the first part they were focussing on the individual trying to fit into the group, this time it’s about the group’s (governments, religion, but even the smaller social groups) inability to control the individual. Based on that idea, the talented bunch has again produced an entirely enjoyable progressive rock album.

After the great prog metal opener, follows ‘Your Life Will Change’ that is calmer and strongly piano oriented with remarkable vocal lines, not catchy as such, but sung in a peculiar pace. Then comes a surprise when ‘Polluted Alcohol’ turns out to be focussing on Damian’s voice, while musically there’s only a thrifty country accompaniment with a prog leaning towards the end. ‘Kindness’ is harsh like the opener, but quite a bit longer, so there’s space for more adventurous and daring variety. After the modest ‘Element’ follows the masterpiece of the album, ‘The Science Within Us’. It opens with very prog experimental tension and dark spoken word, then a lovely passage which flows into a heavily orchestrated part before returning to quieter waters, themselves making space for the final metal part. Quite a musical journey! ‘Semaphore’ goes from quiet to heavy and vice versa with lots of piano/keyboard. The dreamy ‘Death Bell’ introduces ‘The Day’ containing some dissonant heavy pieces. After that, the title track offers an acoustic haven with Spanish guitar. ‘Borders’ too is calm, but ‘Secular Souls’ mends that ‘flaw’ by injecting heavy, somewhat intricate passages with organ.

Simply a great piece of metal infused prog which gets better spin after spin!

Nederlands:

Het dromerige ‘Death Bell’ leidt ‘The Day’ in wat dissonant heavy stukken bevat.

English:

Last November we saw Vredehammer on stage during the tour with Vreid and Keep Of Kalessin. Mastermind vocalist/guitarist Per Valla put down a rigorous performance, assisted by a new rhythm section. Intense stuff that instantly left us in awe, thus we were at the tiptoe of expectations for this sophomore album ‘Violator’ of this collective, initially founded as the solo project of Valla. He has played in Abbath for a while as well, but that is another story.

The highly acclaimed debut album ‘Vinteroffer’ was promptly nominated for a Norwegian Grammy, followed by tours with Satyricon, Vreid and Keep Of Kalessin. The band plays live since February 2013. Vredehammer does not use Norse mythology in their lyrics, but they are inspired by the books of Stephen King and other horror stories. Music-wise they put down an overwhelming sound with a blackened edge and an eerie atmosphere. That is illustrated right away in the opener ‘Light The Fucking Sky’ that pulverizes you as a rollercoaster, but brims with dissonant sounds as well. While they hammer on in the merciless ‘Spawn Tyrant’ and continue at full speed in ‘Violator’, the title track, we can enjoy loads of amazing meandering leads too. Often spoken fragments give us a short break in the energetic aggression shown here. Mark the nervous bass patterns in ‘Deadfall’ and the surprising atmospheric passage in ‘Cyclone’. Vredehammer moves in the twilight zone between black and death metal, with a slightly ascendancy of blackened impressions. Yet ‘Ursus’ happens to be pure melodic death metal and it really reminds us of Amon Amarth with its fetching accents and rhythms. Consequently it is the catchiest song on the album. However, the prize for epic grandness goes to the occluding track ‘Blodhevn’. Here they build up tension towards mighty momentum and a magnificent guitar solo is the icing on the cake. This is brilliant ice-cold Norwegian metal! Hail!

Nederlands:

Hail!

English:

Epitaph is a legendary German band that never made it to the top league, but nevertheless made some fine records and features some musicians that have a history in German rock. The band started already in 1969 en made a first album in 1971 which is a very pricey collector’s item now. Since their start they recorded fifteen albums (studio and live). The leading man of all line-ups is guitarist and singer Cliff Jackson (of British origin) who made also records with Kingdom and Domain. During the nineties, the band was inactive but after the turn of the century they started again in different line-ups.

Now Jackson has reunited with original members Berd Kolbe, Jim McGillivray and guitarist Heinz Glass who played already in a later setting of the band. They recorded this new album and they still manage to keep some of their magic. With a mix of hard rock, progressive rock and even a touch of soft rock they deliver a very enjoyable album with a title track that is a nine minute rock symphony that keeps us happy over and over again.

Nederlands:

Ultimately promising! This is the resurrection of a band from the nineties, before the members got famous with Suspiria. In 1997 Memnock and Athera (now singer in Susperia and Chrome Division, then drummer) founded Abyssic Dreams. A demo with two songs was recorded, but then nothing happened because they focused on Susperia, with Tjodalv (Dimmu Borgir) and Elvorn. When Memnock met Andre Aaslie in 2012, Abyssic Dreams was brought to life again. Aaslie had just released an album with Gromth, with ponderous orchestration in the extreme metal and he is also known from Images At Twilight.

In one and a half year they wrote enough material to come up with a debut album. Guitarist Elvorn (Susperia) and drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Borknagar, Ihsahn, Spiral Architect) joined the band that changed name into Abyssic. In 2014 ‘A Winter’s Tale’ was recorded in the famous Toproom Studios. In the winter of 2015 it was mixed and mastered at the same place.

No less than eighty minutes (!) symphonic doom/death metal passes us by, slow and solemn, subdivided into four very lengthy compositions. As vocals we hear a low-pitched rolling grunt and incidentally melodic guitar leads serpentine through it. However it is mainly the heavy, weighty sounding orchestration that leaps to the eye and adds a personal touch to the songs. The music is menacing, but now and then they build in accelerations with momentum. This is dramatic and very cinematic. The slow tempo and loads of keyboards increase the melancholic feel. Quiescent passages, mostly with acoustic guitars, let you breathe in between the monolithic heaviness. It is quite a challenge to fathom this, but the quality is high!

Nederlands:

Veelbelovend!
