Since their inception in 1998, Primal Fear has built up a solid live reputation. After the release of their most recent studio effort ‘Rulebreaker’ early 2016, they started the next world tour. For the first time also Australia was covered. Now they release the Stuttgart show on CD/DVD/blu-ray. Those who have a liking for energetic speed/power metal with an epic tinge cannot go wrong with this German band. The set list has no surprises, but does not disappoint either. It’s exactly what you want to hear. There is a nice balance between the sturdy speed moments such as ‘Rulebreaker’, ‘In Metal We Trust’ and ‘Nuclear Fire’ and on the other side the longer, epic songs. Occluding track ‘Fighting The Darkness’ might be an inevitable classic in this respect. We could not see the images on DVD, that was not included in our promo package, but we can guess that it is all done to a turn in Teutonic manner. Veteran guitarist/producer Mat Sinner was behind the knops. It seems there is quite a lot of bonus material on the DVD, like video clips, a documentary and footage of another show. Well, fans of the younger version of Judas Priest can purchase this blindly.

Nederlands:

English:

In the Summer of 2016 we had our first encounter with the eccentric Canadian trio Völur an right from the very outset it was obvious that we were dealing here with an exceptional collective that blends mythological respect with a very open-minded view on their music. This first encounter happened with ’Disir’. That was actually their first demo, but wider spread and distributed by their new label Prophecy Productions.

When mentioning the line-up of Völur a tip of the veil about their sound will already be lifted when trying to describe their sound: bassist Lucas Gadke (also in Blood Ceremony) is responsible for most vocals, clean and grunts, experimental violinist Laura C. Bates takes the role over, traditionally taken by guitars and she does any vocals too. The trio is completed with drummer Jimmy Payment. When we had an interview with Lucas last year, he already told us that the proper full length debut ‘Ancestors’ was ready at that time. He described it briefly as being ‘more complex, longer tracks, more variation and more lyrics’ than earlier work and that’s completely right. If ‘Disir’ mainly focused on the female heroines of Germanic mythology, then ‘Ancestors’ deals with their male congenial figures. In addition it is the second album of a four album cycle about the ancient Germanic spiritual world. The album is made up of four very lengthy compositions – going from ten till seventeen minutes long – and it might be best digested with eyes closed, open to be led away into the mythical world of Völur.

The silence is broken with a very spiritual track. Yet the music does not sound bare or thin, but rather organic. Clean chants add an esoteric aura and the violin sounds are sometimes experimental, but they also add a melodic zest. ‘Breaker Of Skulls’ sounds more plump with its marshy doom riffs, even morbid. The scorching grunts of Lucas increase that feel, although his bass lines mostly remain melodious. The violin takes over the role of guitars in such a major amount that boundaries disappear. Sometimes you really think that you are listening to a guitar. ‘Breaker Of Oaths’ unfolds in an introvert manner, with strings and only grunts at the end. Occluding track ‘Breaker Of Famine’ with its seventeen minutes length, includes the biggest contrasts. Initially the violin seems to fly about stiff bass tones in a graceful way, a bit later you experience pulverizing sounds with bestial screams. Repetitive rhythm patterns increase a kind of familiar feel, but it never gets really accessible, not even when we find solace in peaceful passages a bit later. This is almost pure expression, but if you are in the right mood and an adventurous music lover, then you will recognize the value of this challenge. They have taken the next step in their musical development, a sound featuring snippets of post rock, neo folk and surely doom heaviness.

Nederlands:

English:

Mate Bodor, guitarist in Alestorm, began this project to test the borders of modern metal. He found buddies in Alestorm, Heaven Shall Burn, When Our Time Comes … and together they created something new, respecting their roots in metal.

The title track kicks off with polished Swedish death with clean vocals and some piano on top, quite enjoyable. ‘Persistance’ continues in the same vein, with some raw vocals as extra, but in ‘Good’ only clean. Complex structures and virtuoso guitar are the red thread here. ‘Vivid’ is also complex melodic with alternating clean and raw vocals. ‘Fuel’ is a short quiet haven, introducing ‘White Lies’, again the complex metalcore/death angle. Then ‘Reaper’ is arguably the roughest, heaviest song on this platter. After the more melodic ‘Sale’, the long ‘Serenity’ closes.

Quite easy listening virtuoso metalcore due to the dominating clean vocals. Fine platter without real highlights!

Nederlands:

Fijn album zonder echte uitschieters!
