Already since 1996, the brothers Diego (guitar, compositions) and Thundra (drums, recordings) Cafolla are the beating heart of the engrossing progressive outfit Kingcrow (initially the coverband Earth Shaker). We are glad to say that they have climbed up another step higher on the ladder of recognition since their previous album ’In Crescendo’ in 2013. A tour with Pain Of Salvation in the US and in Autumn 2013 a European headline tour spread their excellent music on a larger scale. In 2014 they focused on working on the sixth studio album ‘Eidos’, but in the meantime the Italian band also hit the road with Fates Warning again and did several festival appearances.

It is a tradition by now: ‘Eidos’ has once again become a concept album. There’s even more: one can consider it as the third part of a triptych: ’Phlegethon’ dealt with childhood, ‘In Crescendo’ focused on the end of youth. The path of life continues on ‘Eidos’ and it is stud with making choices and its consequences, leading to regret and disillusions. These reveries have resulted in a dark, melancholic and more progressive album that includes an opulence of magnificent moments and in general it is a bit less heavy than its predecessors. The signature sound of the band, perfected by Kingcrow through the years, is brought to a higher level here, but it still carries traces of bands like Anathema, Porcupine Tree and even Savatage (canon chants). And once again we like to emphasize: even though the music is chockfull of masterly instrumental escapades, the songs remain accessible and in the case of ‘In The Barren Ground’ and ‘At The Same Pace’ even very catchy, in despite of their considerable length.

It is preferable to listen to ‘Eidos’ as a whole musical experience. Only then the majestic flow is obvious and clear and you can intensively enjoy the numerous crescendos that the band included. Vocalist Diego Marchesi sings in a smooth, muffled way, often regaled with polyphonic chants or echoes. But it is most of all the wonderful guitar skills of Diego Cafolla and Ivan Nastasi that always leave us in awe. The fact that even a band like Pink Floyd can be mentioned in this review, is proved by the magical guitar solo in ‘If Only’. That song illustrates to the utmost how repetitive patterns with momentum can lead towards a wild apotheosis. Amazing! In ‘Slow Down’ we hear saxophone as extra instrument and guest musician Fred Colombo plays piano in ‘The Deeper Divine’. By the way, it is the conjunction of keyboards (from Cristian Della Polla) and rhythm patterns that gives the band any resemblance with (early) Porcupine Tree. The album is more sophisticated than previous works, but it has an organic production (mainly done by Thundra and the guys) while Alan Douches did the mastering in the US. Let us hope that Kingcrow will soon visit our areas, so we can enjoy this strong new material live! Top notch quality!

Nederlands:

At The Same Pace’ zelfs uiterst catchy, ondanks hun aanzienlijke lengte.

Fantastisch! In ‘Slow Down’ horen we even saxofoon en gastmuzikant Fred Colombo speelt piano in ‘The Deeper Divine’. Top kwaliteit!

English:

FKBC stands for ‘Free Key Bit Chess’ (pronounced ‘freaky bitches’) and judging from the (few) liner notes, this band has been going for twenty years now. In the past they make some EP’s and live albums, but this is only their second full studio CD. I must admit that I never heard of them before, so I can’t compare this to their earlier work, but that makes it possible to listen with fresh ears. Their metal is performed with a very powerful and a clear sound and their songs can best be placed in the Metallica tradition. This band sounds like very dedicated to their art and their performance is convincing. No new barriers are broken, but this is a good album in its genre, with good listenable songs and burning heavy riffs and guitar histrionics.

English:

Although the title suggests otherwise, this is the fifth album by American melodic rockers Talon. They may be melodic and build on the AOR tradition, but they are certainly not wimpy. Their well crafted songs are played with energy and solid arrangements. The genre may be explored to the full, but Talon manages to make another enjoyable album that will enlighten even more a sunny day. The guitars wail around and the grooves are stimulating and Michael O’Mara is a fine vocalist and potent rock singer. Talon will not change the course of rock music, nor will they take the melodic genre a step further, but who cares if the quality of the songs and performance are this good.

Nederlands:

English:

For attentive followers of the metal scène it happens to be common knowledge that star producer Sascha Paeth once played guitar in a band called Heavens Gate. The history of this German band lies already sixteen years behind us; then we heard the last facts about them. Their final studio album ‘Menergy’ was released in 1999 and after a live gig at a festival in Sweden that same year, they disappeared out of the spotlights.

It all started in 1987 and in those early days the band got some significant help from Frank Bornemann of Eloy, a great formation that isn’t so active anymore either these days. In January 1989 the debut album ‘In Control’ came out. The band was also a success in Japan. Now we can enjoy a chronological and interesting ‘best of’ collection which shows that the band penned a collection of good songs. They play skilfully and smooth in Helloween style and with this collection we have a proper idea of the five albums the band ever released. Great nostalgia and it is diverting to watch their Facebook pages.
