English:

It’s been a while that we heard new music from ex-Angel singer Frank Dimino. That he still knows how to rock is a fact! The album opens right away with ‘Never Again’, a classic hard rock song in the tradition of the true greats! His voice seems to have matured with age and he surrounds himself with a very competent band and a lot of guest musicians like Ricky Medlocke (Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd), Punky Meadows (Angel), Ozz Fox (Stryper), Eddy Odeja (Twisted Sister), Jeff Labansky, Jeff Duncan (Armored Saint, Odin), Dylan DiMino, Danny Miranda (Blue Oyster Cult, Queen) and Paul Crook. This album is not some quickly done affair, but the result of a labor of love, one can hear that all the way. Fans of bands like UFO or MSG will love this album. Now and then Frank’s phrasing and the pitch of his voice are reminiscent of the great Angel days, but this is more than a poor man’s Angel: it’s a true and honest classic rock album that deserves to be heard. And yes, we love that organ in the background!

Nederlands:

Sometimes it is a true relief – in between all the complex subgenres that came into being in our beloved metal genre - to blow your speakers with some pure stuff. In that case you are at the right address with Lörrach, Germany based Aeonblack. The core of the band has been active from 1988 till 2003 as Groggy Elks, but now Aeonblack releases its proper full length debut album ‘Metal Bound’, the successor of their self-titled EP.

Well, the title speaks for itself. The magnificent twin guitars sound of Thomas Winter and Michael Kan grandly refers to Iron Maiden, add some Judas Priest flavour (vocalist Holger convinces us in calmer passages as well as during high-pitched shrieks) and we have a proper recipe for banging your head in galore. During opening track ‘New Reality’ we mainly thought of Iron Maiden, but the classic heavy metal sound of the eighties soon develops and expands. In the title track we have a nice bass intermezzo with delicious bluesy soloing and lower-ranged storytelling vocals. In ‘Coming Home’ we even notice some melancholy, while the free rocking song also sets bassist Jörg in the spotlights for a moment again. Great musicians! In longer songs such as ‘No One Knows’ and ‘Where Is God?’ the flow from sensitive slow to dynamic passages is perfectly composed, so that the large amount of metal clichés one can find on the album is of minor importance than the great time these Germans offer us. In addition this firm energy attack has an epic tinge from time to time (‘Awake’) and we can imagine that the audience will sing along with some parts with a feeling of congenial souls. The band manages to combine fetching choruses with excellent guitar skills. Really good!

Nederlands:

Bijzonder puik!

After the departure of Edmond Karban (Hupogrammos) and Sol Faur from the eclectic Negura Bunget, they continued together in Dordeduh. Soon it resulted in the magnificent album ’Dar De Duh’. However, now they manifest themselves again in the fascinated called constellation Sunset In The 12th House. Obviously this moniker happens to be inspired by astrology, where the twelfth house stands for the sub- and unconsciousness, intuition and spiritual transcendence. This is a mainly instrumental band and the duo is assisted by the rhythm section of Dordeduh: Sergio Ponti on drums and bassist Milhai Moldoveanu. ‘Mozaic’ is the title of this debut album and that fits very well: these are beautiful, atmospheric soundscapes that smoothly complement each other, fluent and mind-blowing.

The compositions are lengthy, but due to the up and down cadenza – just like low and high tide caused by the moon – they never get monotonous. A wide range of peculiar instruments is used, for instance saz baglama in ‘Desert’s Eschaton’. Not only the Romanian folklore shines through in the songs, but also refined oriental sounds. The most striking example of that is ‘Paraphernalia Of Sublimation’. One could simply state that they zoom in on the echoing, fluttering sounds that Sol Faur already managed to get out of his instrument in Negura Bunget, but there is so much more. Even if large parts of the material have a thoughtful character, heavy riffs resound regularly. The sophisticated sounds that have resemblance with ambient, postrock and even shoegaze (I bet that Alcest fans will like this) are enriched with authentic percussion in ‘Rejuvenation’. They have always been good in that. As said before, there is a minimum of vocals on ‘Mozaic’. It is restricted to some esoteric chants in ‘Rejuvenation’, but it turns into a firm grunt in the occluding track ‘Seven Insignia’. Also due to its fetching rhythms and staccato guitars, it appears to be the less ethnic track from the record. The guys have created a special atmospheric piece of art again, which translates the identity from themselves and the surrounding world into enchanting sounds.

Nederlands:

Daar is men altijd sterk in.

English:

Paul Di’Anno sung on the first two Maiden albums. After that, he sang with several other bands or projects of his own, a.o. his Battlezone. For more than 10 years now, he performs in Germany with the Phantomz, where we find e.g. guitarist Andreas of Perzonal War fame. Time has come to record some own stuff, resulting in this debut of Architects Of Chaoz, heavy metal with power angle brought by experienced musicians. Di’Anno still has a great shouting voice, but the years have left traces on it…

The disc opens greedily infectious, fast and headbanging. Then we find the single ‘How Many Times’ with catchy hooks in its chorus. The guitars in ‘Horsemen’s intro made me think of Maiden. Then comes a ballad with rough centrepiece and ditto finale. ‘Erase The World’ opens with sounds from a battlefield and turns out to be a chasing piece with nice twin guitar and slightly epic feel, while ‘Dead Eyes’ stands out by its remarkable original drum patterns. Their anthem ‘AOC’ doesn’t honour its name. It’s pretty mid-tempo and far from chaotic mayhem, a bit disappointing really. When writing ‘Apache Falls’, Paul must have thought, I want my own ‘Run To The Hills’ (Maiden’s vision on the downfall of the Indian tribes). In its original and beautiful outro, we hear extinguishing drums, while the piano slowly swells. Finally, they cover Deep Purple’s delicious ballad ‘Soldier Of Fortune’.

Great achievement from a nearly forgotten voice!

Nederlands:
