English:

One of the great disasters in rock music happened on March 19, 1982 when a small plane with guitarist Randy Rhoads on board crashed just before the eyes of the other members of Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard Of Ozz. He was one of the most promising musicians of that decade and wanted to widen his musical spectrum by studying classical music. Together with Eddie Van Halen, he changed the way guitarists played all over the world. His virtuosity was one of the trademarks of Ozzy’s band and his loss was almost irreplaceable. The void was filled at that moment by the great and much underrated Bernie Tormé and afterwards by Brad Gillis and later Zack Wilde but that’s another story. Bob Kulick – himself a very accomplished player - assembled some top musicians to record a tribute for the unfortunate guitarist. Bassist Rudy Sarzo who also played with Ozzy takes all the bass parts and some of the best guitarists on the planet came to pay tribute to Randy: Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Jon Donais (Shadows Fall, Anthrax), Alexi Laiho) (Children Of Bodom, Doug Aldrich (ex-Whitesnake), Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss), George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), Joel Hoekstra (Night Ranger, TSO, Whitesnake), Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind), Brad Gillis (Nightranger), Dweezil Zappa and Bernie Tormé. The drums are shared between Vinnie Appice, Frankie Banali and Brett Chassen. Most of the vocals are done by Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth) and he does a great job. Serj Tankian’s performance on opener ‘Crazy Train’ is weak and Chuck Billy (Testament) gives a special twist to ‘Over The Mountain’. Randy’s brother Kelle is limited to singing one track and that’s for the better. Overall this is an enjoyable tribute with great players and great songs. On some of the songs Ozzy’s voice is badly missed. The guitarists are all top! Listen to George Lynch, Doug Aldrich, Bernie Tormé or Joel Hoekstra and make it a stepping stone to the music Randy made with Ozzy and Quiet Riot.

Nederlands:

Talking about youngsters with a true DIY attitude… Evil Invaders is your band! You cannot ignore them when looking at the upcoming gigs list. In January they did some additional gigs in Germany, but now all spotlights are set on the release of their debut album ‘Pulses Of Pleasure’. It has been released by renowned label Napalm Records and when we talked to the four-piece, this appeared to be only the start of a much larger activity.

The guys play old school speed/thrash metal with dizzy-making speed. With the vigorous opener ‘Fast, Loud ‘n’ Rude’ they already hit us right in the face. Howling guitars, amazing (twin) guitar soloing of vocalist Joe and Sam Lemmens and a rhythm section that ultimately swallows the bait. Iron Maiden inspired runs and a concrete foundation à la Slayer reign in the title track and the merciless ‘Eclipse Of The Mind’. Vocals are often wailing into higher regions, sometimes with high-pitched shrieks, but there always remains a kind of roughness. One may think of Agent Steel, the Canadian Razor (where they get the band name from) or even the theatrical hectic style of David Bower from Hell. We like to mention that ‘Siren’ stands out with its sneaky structures, going into crescendo to a climax. Towards the end the atmospheric ‘Blinded’ leaps to the eye and this happens to be the intro of a chunky apotheosis. Ending with a bang, they say, just listen to the mighty ‘Master Of Illusion’. This is a strong record within its genre, great stuff to enter the international metal scène, guys!

Nederlands:

Over ondernemende jonkies gesproken…
