English:

‘Shadow Of The Red Baron’ is the third album by Belgian based band Iron Mask and was first released in 2010 and this re-release has been expanded with two re-recordings with current singer Artur Almeida of two later Iron Mask songs: ‘Fifth Son Of Winterdoom’ which was the title track of their fifth and latest album and ‘The Picture Of Dorian Gray’ is from the same album. The melodic power metal and ‘classic’ hard rock on this album stands the test of time and is still a joy to listen to. In January 2016 the band is on tour with Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody and this album is the perfect companion to promote the tour. Dushan is a master on the guitar and the band plays his brilliant arrangements with great fluidity. New singer Artur Almeira sounds a bit like Bruce Dickinson and does a good job on the bonus tracks.

Nederlands:

English:

The album ’Emerald Forest And The Blackbird’ ended up high in many lists of the year 2012, also in the one from the undersigned. How could the band ever surpass this? Well, then we underestimated workaholic Juha Raivio! After the tour cycle for above mentioned album, he smoothly wrote two and a half hour music and that found its way to three CDs (or five vinyl discs). All brand new material. It turned into an evening filling musical adventure in which the six Finns show the different sides of the band, although we can categorize everything among their signature melodic doom/death metal style, brimming with melancholy and indefinable yearning.

‘Songs From The North I’ can be considered as the regular successor of ‘Emerald Forest And The Blackbird’ and consequently it stands for one hour of music in the well-known magnificent style they are famous for. Opener ‘With You Came The Whole Of The World’s Tears’ opens with crystal-clear guitar sounds and solemn spoken words, followed by a delicious guitar eruption regaled with juicy grunts as well as clean vocals. As always they work with building up tension and contrasts in a phenomenal manner, while the timbre always remains ultra melancholic. ’10 Silver Bullets’ and ‘Rooms And Shadows’ are a bit more up-tempo and rocking, while ‘Heartstrings Shattering’ happens to be a beautiful contemplative song in which we hear female singer Aleah Stanbridge in a few lines. Keyboards of Aleksi Munter have often an important function by adding some soaring accents or thoughtful piano notes. ‘Lost & Catatonic’ has an ultimate catchy chorus that instantly haunts you, while occluding track ‘From Happiness To Dust’ is simply giving me goose-bumps. Guitar skills are very emotive, while spoken fragments create a desolate atmosphere.

‘Songs From The North II’ shows the introvert, mostly semi-acoustic side of the band. Vocalist Mikko Kotamäki really surpasses himself in his clean chants and the band appears to be captivating without getting too mellifluent. The instrumental ’66,50°N, 28,40°E’ reminds a bit of the Twin Peaks soundtrack and includes a melody we also heard in ‘Heartstrings Shattering’. Here we are dealing with some connections between the songs, mentioned by Juha, while respect for nature reigns in a wonderful manner in ‘Before The Summer Dies’. The third album ‘Songs From The North III’ goes for funeral doom and thus it gives us a proper uppercut after the peaceful second disc. Here we can hear the most extreme side of Swallow The Sun in premiere. Nevertheless there are many introvert passages and dark spoken parts, so it never gets monotonous. Serene choirs add an empyrean zest to ‘The Clouds Prepare For Battle’, going in crescendo towards a mighty climax. Take the time to get to know this exquisite music and you will be rewarded with one of the best albums ever written in the doom metal genre.

Nederlands:

‘Songs From The North I’ gaat door als de reguliere opvolger van ‘Emerald Forest And The Blackbird’. Opener ‘With You Came The Whole Of The World’s Tears’ opent met heldere gitaren en plechtig gesproken tekst, waarna de heerlijke gitaaruitbarsting met zowel smakelijke grunts als cleane zang aangevuld wordt. From Happiness To Dust’ simpelweg kippenvelverwekkend is.

English:

Tranquillizer was founded in 2008 by Johannes Gauerke (vocals, trombone) and Madeleine Kühn (bass) and the first years were spent on finding the right musicians for the band. In the meantime they tried to develop a signature sound of their own. We hear black metal with any melodic death metal influences, in some of the songs the sackbut (trombone) leaps to the eye. In 2011 they released the EP ‘Blutrot’, two years later they started to tour in Germany. Now a debut full length ‘Des Endes Anfang’ has been released.

After the instrumental intro ‘Agonie’ follows black metal with sharp-shrieked vocals, while a low-pitched guttural death growl is used now and then. Music-wide it appears to be quite sharp and even thrash-like from time to time. In ‘Blutrot’ and the better ‘Seelenreiter’ we hear the trombone, but that is not of such a high level as we remember our enchantment about Sear Bliss. ‘Welk’ includes a fine guitar run and now and then there is room for a guitar solo, yet it all sounds a bit laborious. In brief: quite an okay debut, but there is a good deal of work to do in order to improve, also in the production.

English:

In fact, this debut is a compilation of the three EP’s the Australians have recorded so far, ‘Life and Death’, ‘Dying Daze’ en ‘The Watcher’s Dream’, completed by two new songs, one of them being the title track. The aliases of this threesome were chosen from the names of cards from the 22 ‘great arcane’ trump cards in the tarot. On a picture from the ‘metal archives’ site they look pretty young and yet they manage to recreate an incredible warp in time, for this feels as if we listen to something from the early seventies.

The long opening song contains in it’s first half only voice – not a remarkable one, though it suits the music - and guitar, then the rest, with prominent role for keyboards, joins for a slow, rather somber prog rock. The next one is sturdier, but again with loads of keys, as slow as the previous, with effects on voice and contains a long jamming outtro. The organ in the beginning of the ghoulish ‘The Wasp’ made me think a bit of Ken Hensley’s (Uriah Heep) style and that happens a few times over, scattered over the album. A bit further we have the title track, very good with a whiff of Wishbone Ash (in ‘Dying Daze’ which comes a bit further, there’s even a short passage reminding of their ‘Warrrior’). The doomy ‘Leaving’ has something of Atomic Rooster with a bit of early Black Sabbath, while ‘Mystic Cavern’ has bluesy influences with delicious keyboard. And so on, past ‘The Horn’ which holds some Purple keyboards in store, to the very Heep of the closing song.

In short, a great hour of retro (psychedelic) prog rock ! Enjoy it to the fullest!

Nederlands:

‘Life and Death’, ‘Dying Daze’ en ‘The Watcher’s Dream’, aangevuld met twee nieuwe nummers, waaronder het titelnummer.
