English:

Dunderbeist is a very active Norwegian band, made up of experienced musicians of bands like Stonegard, KITE and Krace. Since 2008 they release an album every year. The previous one ‘Hyklere’ (2015) took a bit longer to create, but now they have decided to regale us regularly with an EP. The first one is called ‘Tvilja’, including five songs and has ‘doubt’ as main lyrical theme. Not that we instantly noticed that, since all lyrics are in Norwegian language.

Dunderbeist plays vigorous rock, more Audrey Horne than Vreid or Emperor to name something of the region. The guitar skills of Ronny Flissundet and Fredrik Ryberg are ace and vocalist Torgrim Torve sings – in despite of his Viking name – clean and diverting. Rock songs such as ‘Kometen Kom’ and ‘Terpentin’ start with slow fluttering guitar sounds, but they go in crescendo with loads of magnificent soloing. In ‘Vakum’ vocals are featured and one might call this a storytelling plea, until it gets wilder towards the end with – again – masterly guitar leads. In ‘Tvilja’ the ghost of Sólstafir wanders, while the pumping bass and introvert vocals of the last track lead towards fervent guitar escapades. Great! Thus it tastes for more! Smart move!

Nederlands:

Slimme zet!

English:

After their debut ‘When Dreams Become Nightmares’, the duo Tor-Helge Skei (Manes, Manii) and Anna Murphy (ex-Eluveitie) switched label and release this sophomore effort, with the help of plenty of guest musicians. Their name, Lethe, is taken from one of the five mythological rivers from the Greek underworld, which had the bad property, that whoever drank from it, experienced complete oblivion.

Opener ‘Night’ begins with an electronic soundscape, gets more atmospheric, then adding Anna’s singing/chanting and so the track gets heavier before fading out towards the end.
‘Future’ begins more experimental, after which frugal keys are added, followed by a heavier passage with experimental edges, with some confusing vocals poured over. Then, ‘Sun’s intro made me think of Ayreon, before it develops into prog/avant-garde with heavy passages. The short ‘Doom’ is electro/metal with Anna’s voice as main feature, followed by ‘Birds’, that sets in with a dreamy soundscape and turns into metalized electro/pop. The title track is an ambient, atmospheric opus, in which male- and female voice, both pretty fragile, alternate in dreamy soundscape. ‘Snow’ opens with pretty dreary keys and somber whisperings, turning into heavy doom with fragile keys and ditto voice, while ‘Fire’ opens acoustically and turns slowly heavier with a tense undertow and alternating male- and female voice before getting to a crescendo outro. ‘With You’ is built around a peculiar piano motive and Anna’s voice before getting heavier in its second half, while the closing ‘Exorcism’ is a rippling trip towards the end of the album.

Interesting and compelling mix of styles, which some will love to bathe in, while others will discard.

Nederlands:

English:

White Willow happens to be a Norwegian art rock band, active since 1995 in ever changing line-up. They describe their music as pop songs stretched to pointless lengths and regaled with weird sounding instruments. The beautiful artwork is obviously done by Roger Dean, with a cover that reminds us of Yes and Uriah Heep.

The album kicks off with two rather compact songs. We hear soaring synthesizers and stately horns in the title track, relished with sweet female vocals. It is calm music, while only drums add a heavier accent for a moment. ‘Silver & Gold’ is also very relax. ‘In Dim Days’ appears to be the first lengthy track (eleven minutes) with loads of bleebs, calm female chants and ditto prog solo on guitar. There are few heavier riffs, later a nice solo on a bed of mechanical sounds and a soaring passage with organ. ‘Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss’ is just a kind of spatial intro for the next mammoth composition. ‘A Scarred View’ is eighteen minutes long and turns into my favourite. Initially it smoothly ripples on with fairy-like childish vocals, but later we have plenty of beautiful solos on guitars and keyboards. The CD version has two bonus tracks. First a really not recognizable version of ‘Animal Magnetism’ from The Scorpions which gets very atmospheric, with a blaring clarinet solo. ‘Damnation Valley’ is piano based and instrumental. This is quite a personal approach of progressive rock from this Norwegian outfit.

Nederlands:

‘Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss’ is in feite een spacey intro voor de volgende mammoetcompositie. ‘A Scarred View’ duurt achttien minuten en is mijn favoriet.
