English:

In 2009 Norwegian Mistur flabbergasted us with the amazing debut album ’Attende’, an ultimate epic black metal record and the first encounter with a new seminal band. However, we had to wait seven years at the successor. After some festival shows and a tour, the band became inactive for shorter periods. But the good thing is that the six lengthy compositions on ‘In Memoriam’ once again illustrate the huge talents of this six-piece. This time the multilayered arrangements, the progressive elements and the typical Sognasound – home of bands like Windir and Vreid as well – is even more overwhelming than before. What an album it is!

The core of the band still exists of keyboardist Espen Bakketeig and guitarist Andre Raunehaug, with Stian ‘Strom’ Bakketeig in charge of those marvellous melodic guitar solos. Bassist Ole Hartvigsen is now the rhythm section together with new drummer Oliver Øien, while Andre and Espen add some clean vocals. ‘Downfall’ opens with atmospheric sounds, piano and string arrangements, but soon we hear a ferocious outburst in pure black metal tradition. Oliver does a great job as new screamer, but soon there is clean vocal interaction, reminding me a bit of Borknagar. Keyboards have that warm and hearty sound, rather the vintage sound of Hammond than synths, while the classical metal guitar leads constantly weave emotive patterns. Magnificent!

This dense epic heaviness is maintained in ‘Distant Peaks’, but mark the break with beautiful melodious parts after three minutes. A bit akin to Opeth. Mistur infiltrates the virtuosity of progressive metal into their extensive soundscapes. A nice example of this working with contrasts happens to be ‘Matriarch’s Lament’ and let us not forget to mention that clean chants have that melancholic flavour we love. The band is really epic and grand, that’s why mammoth compositions with a length of eleven minutes, such as ‘The Sight’ and ‘Tears Of Remembrance’ seem shorter than their actual length, since they are graced with raucous and quiescent passages. This is done in an amazing manner! Consequently this album – produced by Espen Bakketeig and mixed by Bjørnar E. Nilsen – turned into a stunner in the genre! A must have for aficionados of Sognametal and also for fans of epic, yet harsh black/pagan metal.

Nederlands:

Doet me aan Opeth denken.

English:

We are always on the tiptoe of expectations when asking ourselves which comprehensive creation of Suidakra will come next! The musical evolution of this German melodic death/black metal band with Celtic folk influences is a constant factor in the long career of Arkadius and co. This time we can speak of a superlative achievement. Some time ago we noticed Realms Of Odoric, a cooperation between Arkadius and Kris Verwimp. The latter one does the artwork since ages and in later years he manifested himself as one of the main lyricists of the band. This instrumental, orchestral project is now prolonged into the oeuvre of Suidakra. However, it does not mean that they just metallized the songs. No, the lyrics deal with tribes and characters from the comic book ‘Odoric: The Wall Of Doom’, published by Verwimp in 1996. In the orchestral version, general feats and happenings of that same fantasy world inspired the bombastic music.

It results in a cinematic flavoured album with loads of variegation, while the proper heaviness (fortunately) keeps ruling. The band has done an amazing job and managed to bring this fantasy world to life in their colourful compositions. The intro ‘Into The Realm’ leads us into this world in an epic manner, with momentous deep narrations, bagpipes and guitars. In ‘The Serpent Within’ the proper Suidakra sound explodes at full force. That means folk vs. raucous yet melodic death metal and the juicy grunts of band leader Arkadius as well as clean chants (with several guests). A first highlight appears to be ‘The Hunter’s Horde’ which initially starts with mysterious oriental sounds, but soon it gives you an uppercut with double bass drums and Arkadius’ rough growls. The narrator pops up again in the dark, gloomy ‘Creeping Blood’, while the dynamic ‘Undaunted’ is mainly sung by Tina Stabel, also starring regular guest Alex Römer on bagpipes. ‘Lion Of Darcania’ is the next track that deserves our special attention. With cello and dark choirs, this song goes in crescendo towards an epic momentum. Yet clean (harmony) vocals keep on adding a catchy accent, just listen to ‘Pictish Pride’ that soberly starts with piano. However, Suidakra does not forget their raucous heaviness, that’s what we notice during ‘On The Roads To Ruin’ and ‘Dark Revelations’. A sensitive moment comes with the duet between Tina and guest singer Sascha Assbach (Fall Of Carthage) in ‘Braving The End’. Sad without being mellifluent. After the fast, overwhelming ‘One Against The Tide’, they occlude in a filmic way with ‘Cimbric Requiem’. Now and then a fervent classical heavy metal guitar solo, in some of the songs tasteful orchestration.. it is all there and Suidakra really surpasses itself on ‘Realms Of Odoric’. To be continued…

Nederlands:

Droevig zonder meligheid.

English:

In case anyone has still any doubts: ‘Strong And Proud’ is the definite proof that Doro Pesch is the real metal queen! In 2014 she celebrated her 30 years on stage and besides a world tour (that is still going on ...!) she staged three special shows. One as headliner at Wacken Open Air and two shows in her hometown Düsseldorf with a ‘classic’ night with her band and orchestra and a metal night with her band only. Both nights hosted several guests like Lordi, Biff Byford, Blaze Bayley, Udo Dirkschneider and many, many more!

These were phenomenal concerts which are captured now for eternity. Most impressive is the Wacken set that shows that Doro is a perfect headliner. She worked many months to achieve the standard of this show and it works in every way. She absolutely can handle this big sized stages and crowds. She has a fantastic band and together they make an incredible team. That is made clear also by the documentary that is part of this package where Doro gives us an intimate insight of her life on the road, her band, her crew and her beloved fans. What you get is not only three shows and a 2 hour+ movie, but also a lot of extra’s of outtake material of the shows and even more. This is an indispensable document for anyone that has a heart for true metal, fan or not...! Available in many formats: 2 Blu-ray, 3 dvd, cd (selected tracks) or 2 lp (selected tracks) and a beautiful earbook with fantastic photo’s, the 2 Blu-rays, the 3 dvd’s and the cd. The earbook is the most expensive but without any doubt the must-have for any fan of this dedicated artist.

Nederlands:

‘Strong And Proud’ is verkrijgbaar op verschillende formaten: 2 Blu-ray, 3 dvd, cd (selectie) of 2 lp (selectie).

English:

After their debut dating 2014, this is the second album of this band from Finland.

They open with a nice slab of melodic power with vocal hook, a good break and a slight Helloween influence. In ‘Black Adder’ they shift to a higher gear with flashing keys and guitar. ‘Sacrificed’ intro is slow and dark, then Astralion puts some melodic speed in it with dark keyboard veils which match the intro. A moody keyboard intro introduces ‘Careful’ and a bit further we get a nice guitar solo and key outro. ‘Nightmares’ rushes from start to finish, almost without time to breathe, then the ‘Wastelands’, pretty much power ballad, follows. The fast title track contains a log break with guitar-key duel. The oriental intro of ‘Sahara’ could have been somewhat longer, after that we get too stereotypical melodic fast power, albeit with catchy passages. A whiff clatter of hooves starts ‘Heading West’, the rest is predictable. The long great closer ‘Great Palace’ mixes some Irish folk in the melodic power, while I have to think about Saxon’s train in ‘Princess of the Night’ when Astralion sings about a boat, ‘Queen of Steel’.

Much more variation then their debut, strong progression, though I think they can do better still!

Nederlands:
